Layers vs. Tiers: Understanding Wedding Cake Terminology

When planning your wedding cake, you'll likely hear the terms layers and tiers used frequently. Surprisingly, many couples use these words interchangeably, but they actually mean two completely different things. At Cakes By Ashton LLC, we want our clients to feel confident and informed throughout the cake design process, so let's break down the difference.

What Is a Cake Layer?

A layer refers to the individual cake rounds that are stacked on top of one another to create the height of a single cake tier.

For example, if you order a single-tier cake that consists of three cake rounds stacked together with buttercream or filling between them, that cake has three layers.

Think of layers as the building blocks that make up one section of your cake.

What Is a Cake Tier?

A tier refers to each complete level of a cake.

For example:

A cake with one level is a one-tier cake

A cake with two stacked levels is a two-tier cake

A cake with three stacked levels is a three-tier cake

Each tier can be a different size and is typically stacked vertically to create the traditional wedding cake look.

Here's a Simple Example:

A three-tier wedding cake from Cakes By Ashton LLC typically consists of:

Top Tier: 3 cake layers

Middle Tier: 3 cake layers

Bottom Tier: 3 cake layers

That means the cake contains three tiers and nine total layers of cake.

Our Standard Cake Construction

At Cakes By Ashton LLC, we default to three layers of cake per tier unless otherwise requested by the client.

We have found that three layers create a beautiful, balanced appearance while providing generous servings for your guests. This structure also allows us to achieve the elegant, tall wedding cake aesthetic that many couples love.

If you would prefer additional layers or a different cake construction, we're happy to discuss custom options during the design process.

Buttercream or Filling? The Choice Is Yours!

Between each cake layer, clients have two delicious options:

Classic Buttercream

Our standard pricing includes smooth, flavorful buttercream between each layer. Buttercream provides a classic cake experience and complements virtually every cake flavor we offer.

Specialty Fillings

Looking for something extra special? Clients may choose from a variety of specialty fillings for an additional charge.

Popular filling options may include:

Fruit preserves

Fresh fruit fillings

Cookie butter fillings

Chocolate ganache

Specialty seasonal flavors

Fillings add additional flavor, texture, and customization to your cake, making each bite even more memorable.

Why Understanding the Difference Matters

Knowing the difference between layers and tiers can help make the cake planning process much smoother. When discussing cake size, servings, and design, understanding these terms ensures everyone is on the same page.
